Title: pc dying the death
Post by: midnight_blue on October 06, 2010, 12:04:03 PM
hi, my pc is slowly on it's way out...a sad time indeed...will look to replace it this month, but have a limited budget...advice most welcome, I am not a pc boffin, so any info must be in engrish as our friend Eric would say...I have a budget of no more than £700...am lost when it comes to i5 or i7 or AMD let alone choosing a video card, though I understand that the 5850 appears to be a good one...answers on a postcard as they say...would also need to factor in the cost of the logitech G15 keyboard and G9 mouse - if I buy this thing, I will want to start the killing immediately!! Daniel.

I'll have a look at the specs later tonight or tomarrow.

At a quick glance, part of it looks good, but I would want ddr3 for a new build. ddr2 800mhz is pretty old stuff.

Also, what is the exact make/model of the power supply?

If this is a prebuilt, post a link to this offer.

EDIT:

Had a look at the mobo, and its not so great... If your going to go quad core, then dont skimp on a lessor mobo that will limit things w/ the ddr2 ram.

Prebuilt systems are generally dated hardware sold at a premium price. Best option is to build your own. Dont worry if you've never done it before, its pretty darn easy. If your up to the task, you'll save a fair chunk of cash.

Eric, do you guys have newegg (or simular) over there?

Yep Midnight as Butt said.
Different memory and bigger power supply. I would also change the video card to a 5770.

Have U thought about building it yourself.?

Anyways, Have a look here.

I buy most of my bits @ Overclockers.

Take you time and U will get the selection right.

I found a configuration that is 459$ (WITHOUT- MONITOR, WINDOWS 7 , AND KEYBOARD AND MOUSE,) and that is faster and cheaper. KNOWING that Midnight still has a monitor and a working keyboard it should be as simple as this http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/AMD_Dual_Core_Configurator/ (http://www.cyberpowerpc.com/system/AMD_Dual_Core_Configurator/)

I trust the site. Customize it to your needs.
-or you can browse that web site for different one's but thats as good as it gets for the speed of that computer. If you don't want to mess with building your own.
I recommend you use pick the 500 watt or more if and only if you see that computer as a opportunity.

I would like to thank everyone - especially Eric for your time and effort in helping me find a new machine...if it looks like I have gone against your advice, please do not see this as an insult...the one I am getting is within my budget, and more importantly, will not upset my fiancee too much - LOL. I have noticed that I should be able to pick up the logitech keyboard and mouse from Ebay of all placces!! though quite taken with the MX518...I will keep trying to get into the game, but my current PC has to be switched on and off up to a dozen times as it continually crashes...please bear with me...Kind regards, Daniel.

I was going to recommend the GTX 460 as well!
This is actually a good comparison site if you want to see current hardware stacked up against other recent hardware:
