Become an engi. Earn as stinger missle. Shoot down planes as they fly overhead. Cap flags and win, win, win  ;D

Dark I am sure can help more here.  He has been practicing.  He was a smart cookie and did some practice in BF2 on some dead servers.

I have gotten much better than when I first jumped in.  Here is my short list of tips...

Don't hold W the whole time.  You can fly without holding it and it'll give you a bit more time as you fly across the map to see what the hell is going on.
Don't forget about your afterburner (left shift).  It can help you out of some tough spots.  As do the flares (as Butt knows).
Don't think you are bound so tightly by the map.  Fly out a good ways, turn around, and come back over the field again nice and easy.
Make your controls more sensitive.  When you need to turn around you have to bank pretty hard and you're dragging your mouse across the mouse pad then picking it up and repeating three times it's embarrassing, inefficient, and annoying.

Don't forget:  You are flying a jet.  When you turn you need three things.  Roll in the direction you want to turn, yaw in the opposite direction of the roll, pitch up, throttle up.  You need to learn to roll and turn a 180 without losing altitude, keeping it as tight as possible, and losing as little speed as possible.

I would advise you take this in to account and practice.

Dark might have some more pointers.

Plug in a Xbox360 controller and turn up the sensitivity.

Works well for me...
Not that I can get a kill with a jet... but I can fly it lol.
I'll stick with my engy weapons XD.
