Seeing that the PC is about as awsome as I need it, thinking about a "less than exciting" - post xmas newegg gift certificate usage this year.

Heres what I have now:
says wireless G - or 802.11g, refers to wireless networking standard that transfers data at up to 54Mbps, using the 2.4Ghz band.

Heres what I want:
Ballsy w/out being completly overboard in price. Under $100
EZ for user to understand/configure.
Able to route priority traffic -----> Wired gaming PC > Laptop facebook bullsh*t   (death to facebook)
Right now we are on a DSL line, but want enough "leg room" for future upgrade/speed.

As far as wireless usage goes, at any given time:
1 laptop
2 iphones
1 ipad
1 netflix

Not loyal to any brand, but post sale customer support is a plus in my book. Also, if I upgrade router, will the modem need some love as well?

Gimme your router preferences/suggestions  ;D

OK, time for a few "stupid questions" and/or comments:

I edited initial post to add netflix through the bluray player. Forgot about that. Right now its a wired connection, think Ed was saying his netflix was done wirelessly. Think I may look into that to free up one of the slots on the back of the router.

Will the g/f's laptop still connect to a new router without one of those usb wireless adaptor things? (the router in darks link - leaning in that direction despite posted heat issues in the reviews)

Thanks. yeah, checked the specs on the lappy, and it is b and g capable - so should be good to go there.

On a semi related note. After all my router shopping and reading, I wanted to learn more about wireless security and what was the best way to protect the home router. Confused by all the available options and what they stand for (WPA2, WPA-PSK (AES, TKIP), 128/64-bit WEP) I decided to do some digging and see what was best. Was semi-familuar w/ the "WEP" and glad I did some reading, as the WEP seems to be old tech, and not that great anymore.

Here are a few good articles I found on the subject. I like this one:
http://www.thegeekstuff.com/2008/08/6-steps-to-secure-your-home-wireless-network/

Heres another one:
http://www.pcworld.com/article/130330/how_to_secure_your_wireless_network.html

Both are pretty good but are a few years old. If anyone has good tips, or reading on up to date security for the home wireless network, please add your $.02
Thanks  :D

Well...

New modem works and I can get online when its pluged directly into PC. Plug new modem into new router and it will broadcast a wireless signal that I can log into from the cell phone.

But, none of the wired PCs will get online???

I feel a call to India is in my near future. Hope I can understand the advice "Jack" or "Sally" has for me. urrgh.

Procon will be offline till I get this sorted.

EDIT:
New modem working w/ old router.  Procon back online.

EDIT 2:

Alls well that ends well. Got it all straightned out. Its a refurbished router. Still had previous owners settings. Once I figugred that out and reset it to its default settings (reset button didnt work) I was able to get it set up and rolling along just fine.

Will look at the alternate firmware options after the dust settles from this adventure. Thanks to those that gave feedback on this topic.
