Been tinkering around in the garage, enjoying some great weather.
Latest project, sks stock(s)
I made a stock in the mid-late 90's for it, but it was kinda cheesie (nope, dont ask for pics)
Going to take another swing at it. Had the lumber in my stash. Two of them are oak, one walnut, and one I am not 100% sure about (leaning twoards maple)
Anywho, kinda like the wood PC case, pics will follow as I have new ones to share.

Got a little more done yesterday.
What you'll see as I get a little further along is what I was doing in the first step with the hollow mortise chisel. Basically what I did on it was, only remove the bulk of the material that was in the way, prior to cleaning out the pockets with a router with a straight cutting bit. I then made a 'jig' that the router will ride along and make the very accurite cuts. I then have to adjust the depth of each individual parts of the same opening. You'll see four different depths of cut.
This is the front end of the stock. I'll route out where the barrel sets into the stock next.

Probably last update for a while.
I've got the trigger and magazine well cut into the bottom of the stock. Happy with the fit
Next on the list is shaping the butt, handle, and fore grip. Once I get that out of the way, thinking about getting a checkering kit, and cutting in some diamonds in the traditional places you'd see them on a monte carlo. Thinking about carving on the bottom of the handle as well. A lone star sounds good to me.
Anywho, the devil is in the details, which is what comes next.
So far so good though. I am happy with the overall progress. Think the grain structure/pattern is really nice for oak (not overly "wavy"), and have a nice dark stain in mind. (same stain I used on the mantle) Think I will be happy in the end.

BJ asked for an update. Here ya go.
I backed off the checkering and carving for now. Or, at least on this one. Still have larger fish to fry, in terms of both the forend and butt design. As this started taking shape, I saw places where I can make changes next time. Still have more shaping/sanding to do. When I am about done, I'll cut 1" off the butt. Still need to buy and fit a recoil pad. And finally. Sand. Stain. Seal.
