This will also work if you have an older laptop or the like, and want to play on that in lieu of the Pi, but the Pi is convenient as it has HDMI out and can run on your TV. If you've never used Linux, virtually all websites and many apps run on Linux. It can be finicky tho, prepare for a little bit of a learning curve, you'll get more comfortable reading system logs.
