If life hands you lemons, ask for Tequila and salt
Hey guys, not sure if this is the best place for this, but my bday just passed recently, and instead of getting a second LCD for the gaming rig (Which would mean a new desk), I think it's time to upgrade the Wii (And put that in my 5 year old's room) and get either an Xbox or PS3 (the graphics look SO much better in HD than anything the Wii had).
The kids will be playing this mostly, but wifey and I kinda dig Kinect (Xbox), look like some promising games there when the kids go down, friends are over, and the wine (and whiskey) starts flowing. Without a Ford vs. Chevy pi55ing match, for the people here with game consoles, which one is the better bet? We won't be playing any multiplayer on it (outside of Mario Kart or the like), and will likely use Netflix, which I think is on both.
We already have a Bluray player, so the Xbox absence of Bluray is not a liability for us.
Muchachos gracias in advance!

Without sounding like I am being inspired by a Pulp Fiction line...Muchachos means little boys.
I have a Playstation 3 with Playstation move. The move system works great and I think it is MUCH more dependable than the kinect which tends to make games too easy. If the kinect worked correctly, the games would be impossible because there is no way the camera could absolutely correctly read your movements and tie them to the exact movements you want to make in the game.
The Kinect though is the more popular system by far because it's so easy and people like things to be simple and to work for them without them having to put in any effort. People are lazy and a bit childish when it comes to technology. That's why when my dad loses anything in a game on the PS3 he gets pissed. Case in point, every Apple customer. Apple is not the superior system but it is much more popular because you can only move in a straight line. You can't branch out and do what you want to do. But this means that there is little room for error, if any, so people can do nothing and get what they think is everything. (You're welcome, Dark)
So get an XBox if it's just your kids because they'll enjoy that and so will you most likely.
I have a PS3 because I want the Japanese games and XBox does not provide those. Also, I like Sony better than Microsoft. The XBox is just a computer with severe limitations. A PS3 has the same limitations, but it is an entertainment console, not a modded computer. So I guess I see Sony as more honest, whereas Microsoft just takes the computer stuffs they make and boxes it, hence XBox.
So as I said, in conclusion, for your situation it sounds like the XBox would be better for you.
Hope this helps.

...and so will you most likely....
Did Loki just call me out?
And where did the Epic Fail post go??
From what I am gathering, it seems like based on my situation, most people are saying Xbox.
Regarding Apple, recall that it's Unix underneath, so there is a whole level of configuration available under the hood, even moreso than Microsoft's Powershell. I have a Macbook Pro and actually use it more than my other machines, but I also support a Linux enviro so my case may not be the general public's.
I'm no Apple fanboy, but their stuff is very well designed, and stupefied for the masses, which is a brilliant business direction as Apple had more cash on hand than the Federal government until a month or two ago. How long did it take the rest of the phone industry to finally catch up with the iPhone? As many years as it took tablet manufacturers to catch the iPad (which they're still not really close, from a sales perspective). All I can say is that Apple shareholders (including myself from an IRA/401K/529 perspective) ain't going anywhere anytime soon! They've mad college planning for the rodents much easier in the past 2 years for me!
You gotta give Apple props for cashing in on stupid! Too many manufacturers give the general public too much credit!

lol...had the same question myself a couple of months ago...what swung me was the price of games...PS3 games appear, at least in the UK, to be a lot cheaper...also, I had a collection of older PS2 games which I can still play on the PS3...sold!

A word of caution. Last I checked there are two PS3 models. One is cheaper, but the cheaper one does NOT play PS2. It's called backwards compatability. Get the more expensive of the two if you want that.
I suspect it's this way worldwide, but definitely it is here.

absolutely true...I think it is only one or two models of the PS3 that are backwardly compatible...the new ones aren't, I can vouch for that, I read enough forums when looking into it...you also need to check forums for different PS3 issues...some will require additional cooling facilities to prevent certain bits of it over heating resulting in what is called the 'blue light of death'...I bought a fann assisted stand (that doesn't quite sound right - but that is basically what it is), and an additional one that attaches to the side...
