Disclaimer - Just looking for links to articles here - not a "Ford vs. Chevy" e-pissing match.
Was curious about ADM cpu's.
Curious about if there was a AMD cpu comparible to the i7? Guessing the AMD cpus are a bit easier on the wallet?
Also, what type of mobo socket would one need to shop for - for the mystery AMD cpu?
Not a build thread. Just snooping around a bit.

Here is a side-by-side:

Right now, from a CPU prespective, Intel is in the lead.
Where AMD is useful is that it is cheaper, and if you have a certain budget for gaming, it lets you save a $100 and pour $100 extra into a video card (as most games don't pound the CPU as hard as they do the video card).
So if a build is for gaming and you are on a budget, AMD is a good bet.
The fact that the i5 quad is more affordable is bad news for AMD, is it is inline in perofrmance and cost.
The AMD is socket AM2+ and AM3.

AMD is going to push their new Bulldozers out though. Check them out here...

I don't lean either way. I think objectively, Intel is doing better, but AMD tends to be cheaper. So I agree Butt, AMD is a bit easier on the wallet.
Do check those new ones out though. Late Sept is the release date I think.

My I7 2600k in turbo at 3.8ghz has never been above 55c, even after running prime 95 for two hours and benchmarking simultaneously (the simultaneous benchmark was by accident). I have run it as high as 4.3 but BC2 is not oc friendly. It is air-cooled by a huge xigmatek that probibly would not fit in some cases, but my coolermaster haf x has plenty of room. Having said that, my next build will most likely be an AMD-based system. When I was troubleshooting problems with my system gigabytye and intel were not much help... Not picking on them, as this seems to be an industry-wide issue. Forums are not much help when deciding because too many people post before their system has been tried by fire, or don't know what they are doing and want to rant because they couldn't sit on someones lap while they fix it for them.
The other benefit to an AMD is they don't switch sockets every time they come out with a new cpu like intel does. And AMD based systems just seem to be a more stable platform. Also feels kind of kool to cast a stone at the giant, Intel that is.

What I am doing here is sticking my toe in the water for a pre-b3 upgrade to a quad core cpu.
Not sold on the idea, and while happy w/ the ingame graphics w/ my e8400 + 6850gpu I am curious about "cpu usage" for Bc2 w/ a quad.
I have the 775 socket, and when I mentioned upgrading to a 775 quad, random had a cow about "what a waste of time/money" that would be. While I can appreciate his perspective, I am about done w/ the bi-yearly PC overhauls, so would prefer to just change out the cpu rather than buy a new mobo.
As of now, the e8400 is 100% cpu usage for bc2.
I am also thinking about bumping the RAM up from 4 G of ddr2 to 8 G of ddr3 (current 775 socket mobo has slots for both ddr 2 & 3)

^ I actually remember this thread, and don't think it's necessarily a waste of time/money, I am just not sure if you'll see a significant difference (at least in BC2, as I don't believe the game uses more than two cores). You'll see an improvement in things like transcoding/encoding, compression, and video editing with a quad, but with the persepctive of gaming, I'm not sure if it's more than diminishing returns. If ya check here:
http://techreport.com/articles.x/20873/2
the quad core Q9400 can't even keep up with an i3-560 (at least in this game). Not hatin' just saying in your particular case ya might have a little buyer's remorse!

Thanks for the links Groove.
Here is a side by side for my e8400 and the I5 2500k that Random mentioned.

Does look inviting. Speeds just south of the I7 for about C note less.

That's a good pick. If I were to do a rebuild (we had someone come check out our pad yesterday, so cross yer fingers, kinda miss gaming!) I would pick the i5. The mobos aren't as expensive as the i7, and you can get a real good build for around $500-600 (assuming keeping case and PSU).

I'd think $350 would get it done. chip, board and ram.
But yeah, "if" I eventually go ahead w/ this, I'll put the h2o gear, mobo, & e8400 on ebay to offset most of the outlay.

Hey guys.
Long time no see.
Just to throw another wrench in the mix, I'll add the q9650 or q9550 as quad core options. On 775 they were the best there are. Both were capable of a 3.4-3.6ghz oc on stock voltage. IIRC, I had my 9650 up around 4.5 for a bit. Never really been a big AMD fan. I played with a couple of low volt dual cores on 780g mobo HTPC setups, but none of the phenom chips or the coveted "black" chips of the day. I don't dislike them, just went with intel and never really looked back.
I ran a q9650 just before I upgraded to my w3520 and subsequent i7920. With the two motherboards; gigabyte p45 for the 9650 and the asus x58 for the i7 I was running 2x2gb ddr2 and 3x2 ddr3.
In my many, many tests, overclocked, they were putting put roughly the same numbers of operations per second in intel's burn test. It's not a real world type test, but I was expecting the i7 to smoke the q series. Given the hyperthreading in the i7, the results were still very close. Both were under water as well with the cpu under a dedicated 3x120mm rad.
Same 5870 gpu (just one at the time) I was getting very close numbers in unigine heaven as well as 3dmark.
I would check out some of the reviews over at [H].

My recommendation is to wait till the game comes out and see what you can do with it, with what you've got. I know you're the patient type, Butt. Your machine (my guesstimate) will play bf3 nearly as well as it plays bc2. If you're at 100% cpu usage now, you'll be right there over again.
If I were still gaming like back in the day... I'd still vote for x58/i7 though. ddr3 is cheap as dirt now (just looked for the first time in months). That was the most stable machine I ever ran & beat the hell out of.

Wahoo! Hey Tarsier
Thanks for having a look.
The 2500k is in the mail. Agree w/ ya on the ram pricing these days. 8G 1600 dd3 for $40 - after MIR.
Going to put the water cooling stuff on ebay (4x120-pump-waterblock) Not sure about new mobo, but was looking at this. $90 after MIR

Will go back to aftermarket air cooling. Had fun tinkering around w/ the h2o. That said, it was overkill. The raditor was cooling only the CPU after a GPU swap a few months back. Want to see Bf3 in all its FB2 glory w/out breaking a sweat. Think air cooling will be fine. Will be last mobo/chip swap you see from me for a long time. Should get me ahead of even the next generation consoles, so will be safe for most future ports.
Nice to see ya post on the forum. We miss ya, and hope your doing good!

Well, the ebay sale went pretty good. Only thing that didnt go was the motherboard. Going to relist it, and drop the buy now price. Should eventually move it as well.

Is that locked? I think the ones with the k on the end are overclockable where the ones with out are not? Sweet CPU either way!!
